Started messing with HRTF (that's "Head Related Transfer Function") plug ins today in preparation for my spatial composition project. Basically They use models of the human head and fancy maths (fascinating stuff I might add) to create cues that make you're brain thinking sounds are coming from above, below, behind , and in front as well as left and right when listening on Stereo Headphones. You might have heard it in modern video games as well the famous "virtual barbershop" video on youtube: Virtual Haircut.
Now the whole spatial composition thing is two things. An academic, my final year project for a level 8 music technology degree, and Realisms project to make a "concept album" based on Mark Z Danielewski's "House of Leaves" (a smashing and deeply disturbing read!).
Why did I choose to marry the two? Well I've garnered a bit of a passion for Computer music and digital signal processing, acoustics and 3d audio over the last couple of years, so it seemed a good idea to do a project based on it. Also House of Leaves is a book about Space, Spatial distortion, how big things should be...but aren't.In simple terms it's about a house that's bigger on the inside than on the outside(but it's so much more than that really!) So a spatial based composition based on the book seems like a good idea!
Well I'll be putting up how it's going over the next few months and maybe even a few previews of what it sounds like so keep checking back!
Peace and Cosmic Vibes to you all,
Garry
